The depicted United Kingdom metropolitan area is accessible only upon presentation of valid Entry Documentation. The UK ETA must be procured in advance of embarkation.

Preamble

This UK ETA Guide is promulgated as an administrative reference concerning the United Kingdom Electronic Travel Authorisation. It is intended to apprise the Applicant of the UK ETA Requirements currently in force, the documentary obligations to be discharged, and the protocols pursuant to which a UK ETA Application is adjudicated. It does not constitute legal advice and is not a substitute for the operative provisions of HM Government.

UK ETA ONLINE functions as an administrative facilitation portal through which Applicants may initiate and manage UK ETA Application submissions. The Subject is advised that carriage to a United Kingdom port of entry, in the absence of a valid Authorisation Credential or alternative qualifying Entry Documentation, shall result in denial of boarding by the carrier and, where applicable, a determination of inadmissibility.

Statutory Overview of the UK ETA

The UK ETA constitutes a digital pre-clearance instrument, electronically affixed to the machine-readable passport of the Declarant, by which carriage to a United Kingdom port of entry is authorised for permitted short-stay categories not exceeding six (6) months per admission. The instrument is administered exclusively through electronic submission and is non-transferable. This UK ETA Guide treats the Authorisation Credential as the principal compliance artefact for short-stay carriage.

Operative Purpose

The framework is administered for the purpose of facilitating advance identity verification, the conduct of suitability adjudications, and the discharge of carrier liability obligations, in advance of embarkation. It does not, in any respect, displace the authority of the Border Force officer at the port of entry.

Characteristics of the Instrument

  • Lodgement is administered exclusively via electronic portal; no consular attendance is administered.
  • Operative for twenty-four (24) months from the date of issuance, or until expiry of the underlying passport, whichever event occurs first.
  • Permits multiple admissions, each not exceeding six (6) months in duration.
  • Encompasses, by a single instrument, the territories of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
  • Adjudication is ordinarily discharged within three (3) working days of submission.

UK ETA Requirements and Eligibility Criteria

The UK ETA Requirements are of mandatory application to every Subject who is neither a British nor an Irish national, who is not otherwise in possession of qualifying Entry Documentation, and whose nationality is visa-exempt for the purpose of short-stay carriage to the United Kingdom. A UK ETA Application that does not satisfy these UK ETA Requirements is liable to administrative rejection without further notice.

Eligible Jurisdictions

Subjects holding nationality of Member States of the European Union, the United States of America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, the Republic of Korea, the states of the Gulf Cooperation Council, and other prescribed visa-exempt jurisdictions, are required to procure a UK ETA prior to embarkation. Subjects whose nationality requires a Visitor Visa shall continue to be administered under the discrete visa framework and shall not lodge a UK ETA Application in lieu thereof.

Permitted Categories of Carriage

  • Tourism and visitation of relatives.
  • Attendance at commercial meetings, conferences, and exhibitions.
  • Enrolment in study programmes not exceeding six (6) months.
  • Carriage by cruise vessel and transit via United Kingdom airside facilities.
  • Permitted activities of a creative or professional character of limited duration.

Mandatory Documentation Schedule

The Applicant is required to procure and verify the integrity of each of the following items prior to lodging a UK ETA Application. Any discrepancy between submitted particulars and the underlying source documents constitutes a material defect under the UK ETA Requirements.

Travel Document

  • Biometric passport issued by an eligible jurisdiction.
  • Period of validity sufficient to encompass the entire duration of the intended stay.
  • Legible, unobstructed scan of the biographical data page.

Biographical Particulars

  • Legal name, replicated verbatim as inscribed in the passport.
  • Date of birth, nationality, and country of habitual residence.
  • Residential address and operative contact particulars.
  • Occupational status and, where applicable, particulars of the employing entity.

Itinerary Particulars

  • Declared purpose of carriage (tourism, business, transit, or other permitted category).
  • Indicative dates of intended carriage; confirmed reservations are not a precondition.
  • Declaration of prior criminal history, where applicable, in accordance with the suitability provisions.

  • Colour likeness captured no earlier than six (6) months prior to lodgement.
  • Plain background of uniform luminance.
  • Full facial visibility, neutral expression, absent of optical occlusion.
  • Digital filtration, composite imagery, and group likenesses are inadmissible.

UK ETA Application Submission Protocol

The UK ETA Application is lodged exclusively via electronic portal. A procedurally compliant submission is discharged in accordance with the sequence specified below. UK ETA ONLINE administers the submission interface and conducts a preliminary compliance review prior to onward transmission for adjudication.

  1. 1Validate compliance of nationality with the published schedule of eligible jurisdictions.
  2. 2Procure the biometric passport and a compliant facial likeness as specified in the Mandatory Documentation Schedule.
  3. 3Lodge biographical, contact and itinerary particulars within the electronic portal.
  4. 4Discharge the suitability declarations truthfully and in their entirety.
  5. 5Effect payment of the prescribed administrative levy.
  6. 6Await written confirmation of adjudication, transmitted to the operative electronic mail address.

Administrative Levy and Adjudication Window

The statutory administrative levy currently in force is £16 per Applicant, discharged at the moment of submission and non-refundable irrespective of the adjudication outcome. The adjudication window does not commence until payment has been received and the UK ETA Application has been transmitted in a compliant form.

  • Levy: £16 per Subject, per UK ETA Application.
  • Ordinary adjudication: discharged within three (3) working days.
  • Outcome: transmitted in writing to the declared electronic mail address.
  • Refunds: not administered under any circumstances post-submission.

Operative Validity and Scope of Authorisation

A granted UK ETA remains operative for twenty-four (24) months from the date of issuance, or until expiry of the underlying passport, whichever event occurs first. The Authorisation Credential is electronically linked to the passport identified at the moment of submission and is not transferable to a replacement travel document.

  • Permitted stay: up to six (6) months per individual admission.
  • Multiple admissions are administered for the duration of operative validity.
  • A single instrument encompasses England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
  • Issuance of a replacement passport shall necessitate a fresh UK ETA Application.

Grounds for Administrative Rejection

A UK ETA Application is liable to administrative rejection where the documentary or biographical particulars fail to satisfy the UK ETA Requirements, or where the suitability declarations disclose a circumstance inconsistent with admission. The principal grounds enumerated below are illustrative and not exhaustive.

  • Inaccurate transcription of passport particulars or biographical data.
  • Non-compliant facial likeness or composite imagery.
  • Undeclared criminal antecedents or prior adverse immigration history.
  • Lodgement under an incorrect framework (for example, a UK ETA Application by a visa-national Subject).
  • Inconsistency between the declared purpose of carriage and the permitted categories.

Adjudication at the Port of Entry

Notwithstanding the grant of a UK ETA, final adjudication of admissibility is reserved to the Border Force officer at the port of entry. The Subject shall present the passport in respect of which the UK ETA was issued, and may be required to substantiate the declared purpose of carriage and means of subsistence.

  • The passport linked to the UK ETA shall be the passport presented at the border.
  • The officer may request documentary substantiation of accommodation and onward carriage.
  • Refusal of admission at the port of entry is administered separately from the UK ETA grant.

Conduct Within UK Jurisdiction

A UK ETA does not authorise activities outside the permitted categories. The Subject shall confine activities undertaken within UK jurisdiction to those enumerated under the eligibility criteria, and shall not exceed the maximum permitted stay of six (6) months per admission.

  • Remunerative employment is not authorised under the UK ETA framework.
  • Long-term residence and settlement are administered under discrete frameworks.
  • Departure prior to the expiry of the permitted stay is the obligation of the Subject.

Frequently Adjudicated Queries

What is constituted by a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation under this UK ETA Guide?

A UK ETA is a digital Authorisation Credential, electronically affixed to the Declarant's machine-readable passport, permitting carriage to a United Kingdom port of entry for permitted short-stay categories. The instrument does not, of itself, confer a right of admission.

Who is required to lodge a UK ETA Application in 2026?

Every Subject who is neither a British nor an Irish national, and who does not otherwise hold qualifying Entry Documentation, must satisfy the UK ETA Requirements and lodge a UK ETA Application prior to embarkation.

What documentary UK ETA Requirements must be discharged?

The Applicant must produce a biometric passport from an eligible jurisdiction, a compliant facial likeness, an operative electronic mail address, a valid instrument of payment, and accurate biographical and itinerary particulars.

What is the prescribed adjudication period for a UK ETA Application?

The published adjudication window is up to three (3) working days from the moment of submission. Lodgement of the UK ETA Application no later than seventy-two (72) hours prior to scheduled carriage is strongly advised.

What administrative levy is presently in force?

The statutory levy administered by HM Government is £16 per Applicant, payable at the moment of submission and non-refundable irrespective of the adjudication outcome.

What is the period of validity of an issued UK ETA?

The Authorisation Credential remains operative for twenty-four (24) months from the date of issuance, or until the underlying passport expires, whichever event occurs first.

Does a granted UK ETA guarantee admission to the United Kingdom?

Negative. Final adjudication of admissibility is reserved to the Border Force officer at the port of entry. The UK ETA authorises carriage only.

Is each minor required to satisfy the UK ETA Requirements independently?

Affirmative. Each Subject, irrespective of age, must hold an individual UK ETA linked to that Subject's own travel document.

What is the consequence of administrative refusal of a UK ETA Application?

Upon refusal, the Subject must instead pursue a standard Visitor Visa application. A refusal does not, of itself, constitute a permanent inadmissibility determination.

Is amendment of an issued UK ETA permitted?

Negative. The UK ETA is non-amendable. Any alteration of underlying passport particulars necessitates the lodgement of a fresh UK ETA Application.

Does a single UK ETA encompass all constituent UK territories?

Affirmative. A single UK ETA encompasses England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, and permits ancillary movement to the Republic of Ireland via the Common Travel Area, subject to that jurisdiction's own provisions.

May carriage be undertaken pending UK ETA adjudication?

Negative. Carriage shall not be undertaken until written confirmation of grant has been issued. Carriers are obligated to deny boarding to Subjects in the absence of a valid UK ETA.

Concluding Provisions

This UK ETA Guide consolidates the operative UK ETA Requirements, the documentary schedule, and the submission protocol administered for the 2026 cycle. The Applicant is reminded that the discharge of a UK ETA Application is a matter of administrative compliance, and that material accuracy at the moment of lodgement is determinative of the adjudication outcome.

UK ETA ONLINE shall continue to administer the submission interface and to publish administrative notices in respect of subsequent modifications to the framework.
